Peace Symbols Around The World #2: A Masjid & A Temple @ Al Fahidi Street, Bur Dubai, UAE

Opposite the Dubai Museum, you will find a Masjid (mosque) and a Hindu Temple complex side by side. Just next to the Al Kabeer Masjid in Al Fahidi Street of Bur Dubai, is a place for worship for the followers of Lord Shiva and Krishna.
I admit that I was surprised to hear about this during the city tour yesterday. I did not think there would be a Hindu temple in this part of the world, or any other place of worship other than those for Muslims. I have read in Islamic history that the Constitution of Medina was crafted on the basis of multi-religiosity, but I just assumed that the same would not be the case for most Islamic states of this century; especially in this region. Guess I was wrong to assume.
Built in 1958, the template complex is referred to as Shiva and Krishna Mandir. It remains the only place of worship in the entire United Arab Emirates. It is not a proper temple, but it serves the religious needs of Hindus in the country. There are some criticisms, nevertheless, the existence of these two worship places symbolises respect, solidarity and harmony of religions. Certainly some adjustments and compromises have been made, which needs to be appreciated.
I understand that there are some plans to built a temple in Abu Dhabi, and that is a work in progress. Yet, another hopeful vision for peace among religions.
As Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said*:
"Perhaps what our region needs most today is for its people and their religious and cultural communities to tolerate themselves."
